In Nepal, the first quarantine post, referred to as the Livestock Quarantine Check Post, was established in 1996 B.S. (Bikram Sambat). By this time, five livestock development farms had also been established. Until 2022 B.S., these institutions were managed under the Department of Agriculture. In 2023 B.S., the Department of Livestock Development and Animal Health was established, aiming to deliver integrated livestock health, nutrition, reproduction, and management services to farmers' doorsteps. This was done as part of the fifth five-year plan and under a coordinated livestock service program.

To coordinate all agricultural activities, the Department of Livestock Development and Animal Health was merged back into the Department of Agriculture. However, in 2036 B.S., the department was again separated from the Department of Agriculture and re-established as an independent entity. Over time, district-level offices, known as District Livestock Service Offices, and service centers and sub-centers at the village level were established.

On 2049/04/01 B.S., as per the decision of the then Government of Nepal, all agricultural agencies were again merged into the Department of Agriculture. Subsequently, on 2052/03/05 B.S., the government decided to re-establish the Department of Livestock as an independent entity effective from 2052/04/01 B.S. This department functioned with Regional Directorates in all five development regions and District Livestock Service Offices under which various service centers and sub-centers operated.

Introduction:

In line with the principle of decentralization, the Regional Livestock Service Directorate was established in Rajpur, Dipayal, within the Far-Western Development Region in 2040 B.S. This directorate functioned independently until 2048 B.S. From 2049/04/01 B.S. to 2052 Ashad-end B.S., it was merged with the Regional Agricultural Development Directorate.

Following a government decision on 2052/03/05 B.S., the Regional Livestock Service Directorate resumed independent operations from 2052/04/01 B.S. and continued to function until 2075/04/22 B.S. With the country's transition to a federal system, a directive was issued to establish one Livestock and Fisheries Development Directorate in each of the seven provinces.

As per the decision of the Provincial Government of Sudurpaschim Province, dated 2075/04/23 B.S., the Livestock and Fisheries Development Directorate was established under the Ministry of Land Management, Agriculture, and Cooperatives, Sudurpaschim Province, Dhangadhi, Kailali. Currently, the directorate operates with four functional divisions.
